Surface: Smooth.
Shape and Size: Ovoid to obovoid or subglobose. 12.4-17.1 x 7.5-9.5 µm.
Wall: 1-2 µm thick.
Color in Water: Hyaline.
Melzer's Reaction: Dextrinoid, showing longitudinal folds or striations.

Sporocarp Characters

Shape and Size: Ovoid to subglobose or irregular, 1.5-2.5 cm.
Peridium: White when young, brown or discolored when mature. Surface dry, dull, glabrous to slightly tomentose.
Gleba: Composed of numerous cavities, honeycombed or wrinkled. White to pale yellow. Sometimes turning pale red when exposed.
Odor: Not recorded.
Comments: One species, P. lutea, has cystidia that stain red and a yellow peridium which stains purple in KOH.

Name Derivation

Named by preeminent American mycologist Alexander Smith (1904-1986) (1965) for the close resemblance of the basidiocarps to Gautieria morchelliformis.

Distribution

The Pacific Northwest in subalpine habitats in soil under mixed conifers.
Species known from North Temperate Forests: Two.
