Katherine received her M.S. in Forest Science from Oregon State University in 2002 with a thesis on The Response of Small Mammal Mycophagy to Varying Levels and Patterns of Green-tree Retention of Mature Forests in Oregon and Washington. She earned her B.S. in Environmental Science and Policy from Duke University. As an archaeological volunteer at the Lahav Research Project in Kibbutz Lahav, Israel, she was introduced to computer media as a means of transmitting scientific information to a wider audience. While learning to identify fungal spores in the fecal samples of small mammals, she realized that detailed color images and an interactive reference would make the task much easier. Thus, this project was born. She has worked on various ecological projects in Mississippi, Alabama, and North Carolina. She now has a business involving graphic design and marketing.
