Surface: Alveolate reticulate to spiny (all extremes and intermediates occur in single specimens).
Shape and Size: Globose, 20-35 µm in diameter with reticulum up to 3 µm tall.
Wall: Single, <0.5 µm thick.
Color in Water: Hyaline to pale yellow.
Melzer's Reaction: Not distinctive.

Sporocarp Characters

Shape and Size: Irregular to subglobose, 1-2 cm in diameter.
Peridium: Thin, evanescent and cottony, absent in patches.
Gleba: Solid, fleshy, white, developing to cream or pink to dark violet with brown stains. At maturity, brown marbled with pale veins.
Odor: Sour.

Name Derivation

Named by French botanist and mycologist Louis René Tulasne (1815-1885) and his younger brother French physician and mycologist Charles Tulasne (1816-1884) (1843) in honor of 19th century French botanist, Charles Delastre.

Distribution

Associated with Pinus spp. in sandy soils in Italy and Spain.
Season: November and December.
Species known from North Temperate Forests: One, Delastria rosea.
