Bagby Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent undisturbed Douglas-fir-western hemlock forest common to the Oregon Cascades. The RNA is split into two parcels by a heavily used trail that provides access to Bagby Hot Springs. The topography is primarily steep slopes leading away from the trail and creek toward the east and west. Douglas-Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) and western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) are the principal tree species and intermixed with occasional stands of Pacific silver fir (Abies amabilis), western redcedar (Thuja plicata), and western white pine (Pinus monticola). The understory is dominated by huckleberry (Vaccinium spp.) with occasional patches of Oregon grape (Mahonia spp.), coast rhododendron (Rhododendron californicum), and vine maple (Acer circinatum).
