Abbott Creek Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent sierra-type mixed conifer forests, including stands dominated by sugar pine (Pinus lambertiana). The RNA is a relatively large mountainous tract with rugged, generally steep slopes and numerous rock outcrops and escarpments. The soils are volcanic in origin. The entire drainage of Abbott Creek’s main branch is located within the RNA’s boundary. Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), white fir (Abies grandis), incense-cedar (Calocedrus decurrens), Shasta red fir (Abies magnifica var. shastensis), western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla), mountain hemlock (Tsuga mertensiana), western white pine (Pinus monticola) and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) are dispersed throughout the RNA.
