Wickiup Springs proposed Research Natural Area (pRNA) was chosen to represent Shasta red fir (Abies mafnifica var. shastensis) along the lower subalpine zone between the mountain hemlock (Tsuga mertensiana) and white fir (Abies concolor) zones. The pRNA includes a series of perennial springs that run through the northern portion of the site. The topography is fairly uniform with west to southwest side slopes that line above the South Fork Rogue River drainage.  The Shasta red fir-white fir/chinquapin (Chrysolepis)-prince’s pine (Chimaphila)/stolon sedge (Carex inops) plant community is dominant at lower elevations while the Shasta red fir-mountain hemlock/pinemat manzanita (Arctostaphylos nevadensis )/stolon sedge plant community is dominant at higher elevations and gentler slopes. The mountain hemlock/grouse huckleberry (Vaccinium scoparium) community dominates gentle, well drained slopes.
