West Razz Lake proposed Research Natural Area (pRNA) was selected to represent a high elevation glacial cirque pond with black alpine sedge (Carex nigricans). A talus slope is located at the northwest edge of the The small pond and a basin wall extends around to the northeast corner of the pond. The remainder of the pond shore is rocky, but an extensive flat meadow is found at the northeast corner, dissected by a small stream outlet. Black alpine sedge communities dominate the pRNA while subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa)-Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii) /grouse huckleberry (Vaccinium scoparium)-red mountain heather (Phyllodoce breweri) forested communities are also present.
