Tater Hill Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent ecosystems supporting old growth associated plant and animal species, including the Northern Spotted Owl (Strix occidentalis caurina), Vezdaea lichen (Vezdaea stipitata), and blue-gray taildropper slug (Prophysaon coerleum). The topography of the RNA includes varying slopes with near vertical scarps along the top and sides of a landslide with exposed bedrock. Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga), grand fir (Abies grandis) and western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) are the dominant tree species while oceanspray (Holodiscus discolor) and Oregon grape (Berberis spp.) are common understory species.
