Sturgill proposed Research Natural Area (pRNA) was chosen to represent white bark pine (Pinus albicaulis), subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa), and Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii) forests with an open green fescue basin below. The pRNA includes a southwest facing basin that slopes down towards Sturgill Creek. Subalpine-fir/Engelmann spruce and whitebark pine plant communities dominate the basin while subalpine fir is the predominant tree species throughout the pRNA.  Spruce (Picea) and lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) forests include patches of subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa), Engelmann spruce, and whitebark pine.
