Strawberry Mountain Proposed Research Natural Area (pRNA) was selected to represent a homogenous, reproducing stand of whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis). The pRNA is located on a broad, truncated ridge extending north below the summit cone of Strawberry Mountain. Whitebark pine is the predominant tree species. Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii) and subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa) made up less than 1% of the tree species. The shrubs and forbs community includes grouse huckleberry (Vaccinium scopparium) with occasional patches of elk sedge (Carex garberi) and prickly sandwort (Arenaria aculeate).
