Stockade Mountain Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent old growth western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis)/big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata)/bunchgrass communities interspersed with low sagebrush (Artemisia arbuscula). The RNA lies on steep slopes and gently rolling hills near the top of Stockade Mountain. Steep northeast-facing slopes support big and low sagebrush communities. The western juniper/big sagebrush/bluebunch wheatgrass (Pseudoroegneria spicata) plant community, Idaho fescue (Festuca idahoensis) and low sagebrush/Sandberg bluegrass (Poa secunda) scablands dominate the RNA.
