Spring Mountain Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent? At higher elevations, a mix of mountain big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) /Idaho fescue (Festuca idahoensis) steppe dominate areas with deep soils while western chokecherry (Prunus virginiana), whortleleaf snowberry (Symphoricarpos), Saskatoon serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia), and Lewis' mockorange (Philadelphus lewisii) dominate steep talus scree in the northern portion of the RNA. The scree tops out to a larger, relatively flat tableland dominated by low sagebrush scablands. Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) patches dominate springs and north-facing talus slopes.
