Sherwood Butte proposed Research Natural Area (pRNA) was chosen to represent mature white fir (Abies concolor)/Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) in the high cascades and mountain hemlock (Tsuga mertensiana)/red fir (Abies magnifica) community meadows. The topography of the pRNA is gently sloped with a southwest trending ridge. Douglas-fir is the dominant tree species while incense cedar (Calocedrus decurrens) and white fir are also common tree species. Little prince’s pine (Chimaphila menziesii), trailing blackberry (Rubus ursinus), twin flower (Linnaea borealis), and pipsissewa (Chimaphila umbellata) are the dominant understory plants.
