Shaketable Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis) /low sagebrush (Artemisia arbuscula) /bunchgrass, low sagebrush/Idaho fescue (Festuca idahoensis), and bitterbrush (Purshia tridentata) /bunchgrass. The RNA includes a 3.2 km long plateau with steep side slopes and capped with rimrock, particularly along the southern edge of the plateau. Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) is dominant throughout the western juniper savanna and Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) dominates the forested side slopes. Low sagebrush (Artemisia arbuscula) is the dominant shrub while rigid sagebrush (Artemisia rigida), mountain mahogany (Cercocarpus ledifolius), western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis) and bitterbrush (Purshia tridentata) are also common. Idaho fescue (Festuca idahoensis) is the dominant grass species while junegrass (Koeleria cristata), bluebunch wheatgrass (Agropyron spicatum) and one-spike oatgrass (Danthonia unispicata) are also common.
