Scotch Creek Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent a birchleaf mountain mahogany (Cercocarpus montanus Raf. var. glaber)-ceanothus-rosaceous mixed chaparral.  A tributary to the Klamath River called Scotch Creek lies within the RNA boundaries. Scotch Creek drainage is dominated by Oregon white oak (Quercus garryana), Klamath plum (Prunus subcordata), western chokecherry (Prunus virginiana), bitter cherry (Prunus emarginata) and birchleaf mountain mahogany (Cercocarpus betuloides). Wedgeleaf ceanothus (Ceanothus cuneatus) and manzanita (Arctostaphylos spp.) dominate the Lone Pine Ridge area. Two rare plant species, dwarf isopyrum (Enemion stipitatum) and Greene's mariposa (Calochortus greenei), are present within the RNA.
