Red Ponds Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent low elevation permanent ponds with aquatic beds and marshy shore. Topography varies from steep slopes along the eastern and southern boundaries, to flat and gentle ground along the central and northern portions. Overall, the area drains to the northwest. The RNA also includes two ponds, ash swales, rock outcrops, and dry ridge crests. The RNA is dominated by a Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga)/salal (Gaultheria shallon)/swordfern (Macrothelypteris torresiana) forest and a White fir (Abies concolor)/dwarf Oregon grape (Mahonia nervosa)-salal forest.
