Red Mountain proposed Research Natural Area (pRNA) was chosen to represent ecosystems supporting several sensitive species as well as western white pine (Pinus monticola) stands. The pRNA includes south aspect slopes at low elevations, alder glades, large rock outcrops and associated talus fields, and various steep slopes and benches. Perennially wet meadows with marshy land and seasonally dry meadows with scabland also lie within the pRNA’s boundaries. Western white pine dominates the northwest side of the mountain along with the several sensitive species. Jeffery pine (Pinus jeffreyi) is a common tree species on south-facing slopes while Greenleaf manzanita (Arctostaphylos patula) and beargrass (Nolina) are common shrubs. Phlox (Phlox), buckwheat (Eriogonum), and anemone (Anemone) are common herbs throughout the pRNA.
