Mt Joseph proposed Research Natural Area (pRNA) was selected to represent cushion plant (low-growing mat-forming) communities found at high elevations in the Blue Mountains. The pRNA lies on a broad, south slope of Chief Joseph Mountain. The upper alpine elevations of this south-facing slope also include fell fields. Numerous cushion plants endemic to the Wallawa Mountains are found here. Pacific anemone (Anemone multifida var. tetonensis), parrothead Indian paintbrush (Castilleja rubida), arctic alpine forget-me-not (Eritrichium nanum elongatum) and Wyoming Townsend daisy (Townsendia montana) are also common throughout the pRNA.
