Hot Lake Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent a meromictic quality lake with two species of brine shrimp, bluegreen algae (Chara) and a dense population of green sulfur bacteria. The saline lake is on the west side Kruger Mountain, on a ridge between the Similkameen River to the southwest and Osoyoos Lake of the Okanogan River valley to the east. The RNA lies in a catchment basin with no outlet and is surrounded by moderately inclined hillsides. Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) and Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) dominate the forest. Several saline/alkaline species that are uncommon in the area grow on the banks of the lake, including red glasswort (Salicornia rubra) and saltgrass (Distichlis spicata).
