Hoover Gulch Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent mixed evergreen forest common to Southwest Oregon.  The RNA is comprised of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii)-canyon live oak (Quercus chrysolepis) woodland, Douglas-fir-tanoak (Lithocarpus densiflorus)-canyon live oak forest, and a permanent stream system on metamorphic rock. It contains both relatively undisturbed and more recently burned forests of the Siskiyou Mountains. There are many rock outcrops with channels of intermittent and permanent streams. Many stands of canyon live oak (Quercus chrysolepis), tanoak (Lithocarpus), madrone (Arbutus), Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), and sugar pine (Pinus lambertiana) lie within the RNA.  There are also a few scattered stands of Jeffrey pine (Pinus jeffreyi) and incense-cedar (Calocedrus decurrens).
