High Peak-Moon Creek Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent forest associations that span low to mid elevations in the northern Oregon Coast Range: coastal forest of hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) and Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), scattered old growth Douglas-fir trees, and riparian hardwoods. The RNA is a first- and second-order watershed containing headwaters and much of the upper reaches within the site boundary. A small portion of the headwaters of Beaver Creek are also included where it flows northwest off a portion of the ridge connecting High Peak to Grindstone Mountain. Sword fern (Polystichum munitum) and salal (Gaultheria shallon) are also common species.
