Hammond Hill Sand Hills Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent a mosaic of big sagebrush-bitterbrush/Indian ricegrass (Artemisia tridentata-Purshia tridentata/Achnatherum hymenoides), big sagebrush/needle and thread (Artemisia tridentata/Hesperostipa comata) and big sagebrush/black greasewood (Artemisia tridentata/Sarcobatus vermiculatus) on sandy soils. The RNA lies on a series of low hills and dry washes with very loose, sandy loam derived from decomposed volcanic ash.
