Halliday Fen Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent three terrestrial plant communities, one wetland community, and thirteen rare plant species.  The RNA is located on the remnants of a lake within a glacially-carved basin. A small tributary drainage basin lies within this area and flows into Slate Creek. The two most dominant plant associations in the marl fen are bladder sedge (Carex intumescens) and Cusick's sedge (Carex cusickii). Carr areas are dominated by mountain alder (Alnus viridis ssp. crispa )/ blackberry (Rubus) communities on the east end of the RNA, and willow (Salix spp.)/ slender sedge (Carex gracilior) communities in the wet central portion of the RNA. A few-flowered spikerush (Eleocharis quinqueflora) association dominates the bog in the northeast fringe of the RNA. Western redcedar (Thuja plicata), Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii), and water birch (Betula occidentalis) dominate the wetland. Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) and grand fir (Abies grandis) are dominant tree species in the ridge top upland forests, and western red cedar is the dominant tree on side slopes. Draw bottoms and the flat margin around the fen are dominated by western red cedar and western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla). Rare plant species include mingan moonwort (Botrychium minganense), Buxbaum's sedge (Carex buxbaumii), Yellow sedge (Carex flava), Crested shield-fern (Dryopteris cristata), and Water avens (Geum rivale).
