Green Mountain proposed Research Natural Area (pRNA) was chosen to represent subalpine parkland mosaic, heather-huckleberry communities, and subalpine lush herbaceous communities. The pRNA includes northwest and southeast basins in addition to southwest, north and east facing slopes. These slopes range from moderately steep to almost sheer cliffs. Many subalpine communities including black alpine sedge (Carex nigricans), partridgefoot (Luetkea pectinata), red mountain heather-western cassiope (Phyllodoce empetriformis-Cassiope mertensiana), blueleaf huckleberry (Vaccinium deliciosum), big huckleberry-Cascades azalea (V. membranaceum-Rhododendron albiflorum), Sitka valerian-American false hellebore (Valeriana sitchensis-Veratum viride), thimbleberry –fireweed (Rubus parviflorus-Epilobium angustifolium), and showy sedge (Carex spectabilis) are common throughout the pRNA.
