Grass Mountain Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent a grass meadow complex, noble fir (Abies procera) forest and the headwaters of a high-elevation stream containing noble fir along its upper reaches. Slope orientations are predominantly west-northwest and south-southeast. Headwaters of Skunk Creek, Mill Creek, Easter Creek and Cove Creek lie within the RNA. Pacific silver fir (Abies amabilis), noble fir (Abies procera), Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga) and western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) are the dominant tree species while starry false Solomon seal (Maianthemum stellatum) and miner's lettuce (Claytonia sibirica) are the dominant understory species.
