Glacier Lake proposed Research Natural Area (pRNA) was selected to represent a high elevation lake with low willow communities. The pRNA includes an entire glacial basin surrounded by high granitic walls with talus slopes and persistent snow banks. Within the basin is a down slope to a drainage channel forming the West Fork Wallowa River. Subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa) and whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis) are the primary tree species found within the pRNA. There is a dense patch of sheep sedge (Carex illota), alpine timothy (Phleum alpinum), and alpine shootingstar (Dodecatheon alpinum) near the edge of the lake while low willow (Salix spp.) can be found in the snowmelt flush zone. A hummocky forb meadow is found in the drier portions of the main meadow.
