Fox Hollow Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent a mature Douglas-fir/ponderosa pine (Pseudotsuga menziesii/Pinus ponderosa) forest in the Willamette Valley foothills. The RNA lies on a moderate, west-facing slope of a north-trending ridge. The RNA is dominated by Douglas-fir with several stands of ponderosa pine on south and north aspects. Occasional stands of incense cedar (Calocedrus decurrens) and Oregon white oak (Quercus garryana) are also present. Pacific poison oak (Rhus diversiloba) dominates the understory along with several patches of beaked hazel (Corylus cornuta val'. Californica), oceanspray (Holodiscus discolor), and giant chinquapin (Castanopsis chrysophylla) . Common herbaceous plants and cryptogams include Oaks toothwort (Cardamine pulcherrima val'. Tenella), Pacific hound's tongue (Cynoglossum grande), bedstraw (Galium spp.), snowqueen (Synthyris reniformis), and several mosses and liverworts.
