Flynn Creek Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent a major undisturbed inland stream drainage of the Oregon Coast Range with an anadromous fish population. The RNA is located entirely on Tyee sandstoneand has many small intermittent and perennial streams. The dominant tree species are Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) and red alder (Alnus rubra). Vine maple (Acer circinatum) is evenly distributed across the RNA while Salmonberry (Rubus spectabilis) dominates on the wettest sites and sword fern (Polystichum munitum) dominates on the upland site.  Flynn Creek serves as a natural reference stream for the Alsea Watershed Study, and a small stream gauge is located just inside the RNA.
