Cedar Log Flat Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent forestland, shrubland, meadows, and bogs that exist on soils derived from serpentine bedrock. Cedar Log Creek and six associated bogs flow through the RNA. Jeffrey pine-Huckleberry oak (Pinus jeffreyi- Quercus vaccinifolia) is the most common plant association located on the southern end of the RNA. Whiteleaf manzanita (Arctostaphylos manzanita) and California coffeeberry (Rhamnus californica) are the dominant shrubs. A Jeffery pine-Dwarf ceanothus (Ceanothus pumilus) association is located on the east side of the RNA. The association is composed almost entirely of Jeffrey pine with squaw carpet as the dominant shrub species. A Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii)-Jeffrey pine association is located on the central portion of the RNA. The overstory is dominated by Jeffrey pine and Douglas-fir while the understory is dominated by huckleberry oak. The shrub layer is dominated by whiteleaf manzanita, California coffeeberry, and box-leaved silk tassel (Garrya buxifolia) while the herb layer is dominated by beargrass (Xerophyllum tenax). A Port Orford cedar (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana)/Box-leaved silk-tassel plant association is located along Cedar Log Creek. The overstory is dominated by Port Orford cedar and Douglas-fir while the understory is dominated by huckleberry oak and California laurel. (Umbellularia). The shrub layer is predominantly California coffeeberry, western azalea (Rhododendron occidentale), and western ledum (Ledum glandulosum).
