Camas Swale Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to provide an example of a dry-site, mature Douglas-fir forest in the Willamette Valley foothills. This site also incorporates a xeric meadow community that is slowly being invaded by several shrub and tree species. The area is characterized by low, rounded hills in the east that pass into more mountainous, highly dissected terrain to the west. Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) dominates the forest while incense cedar (Calocedrus decurrens) is the dominant tree species in and around the meadow. There are also a few stands of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa), bigleaf maple (Acer macrophyllum), black cottonwood (Populus trichocarpa), Oregon ash (Fraxinus latifolia), and Oregon white oak (Quercus garryana). Douglas fir/salal/swordfern (Pseudotsuga menziesii/Gaultheria shallon/Polystichum munitum) and Douglas fir/Oregon grape (Pseudotsuga menziesii/Berberis nervosa) are the main plant communities.
