Bushnell-Irwin Rocks Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent Oregon white oak (Quercus garryana) plant communities. The RNA lies on an extensive west-facing ridge system with first to third order streams. Plant communities including grass balds, oak savannas, oak-madrone (Arbutus menziesii)-conifer woodlands, and mixed conifer forests. The RNA includes five special status species: Howell's lewisia (Lewisia cotyledon var. howellii), California sword fern (Polystichum californicum), spring phacelia (Phacelia verna), Thompson's mistmaiden (Romanzoffia thompsonii) and western isopyrum (Enemion stipitatum).
