Bear Gulch Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent a Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii)/canyon live oak (Quercus chrysolepis) forest. The RNA has south-facing slopes that are moderate to very steep. Douglas-fir/canyon live oak and southwestern Oregon mixed conifer forests are the major plant communities of the RNA. Pacific madrone (Arbutus menziesii), and golden chinquapin (Chrysolepis chrysophylla) are common tree species on south-facing slopes.
