Memorial Scholarship

Greg Smith, a graduate student at the University of Northern British Columbia studying with Staffan Lindgren and Allan Carroll, has been selected as the 2008 Memorial Scholarship recipient. View additional information about the Memorial Scholarship, or a list of previous recipients.

Criteria and information necessary for students interested in applying for the Western Forest Insect Work Conference (WFIWC) Memorial Scholarship are outlined below. The application form should be filled out when applying for the scholarship along with all other required information.

Application Form

Scholarship Application Criteria

1. Deadline for submission of applications to the WFIWC Scholarship Committee is January 15 each year; for example, the deadline for the 2008 award was January 15, 2008.
 
2. To be eligible for consideration, students must be enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited University in the United States, Canada or Mexico at the Masters or Ph.D. level.
 
3. Students must have a thesis/dissertation topic in the field of forest entomology.
 
4. Students must be members (new members are acceptable) of the WFIWC.
 
5. With application, students must submit a one page outline or summary of their area of research (thesis/dissertation).
 
6. A copy of all academic transcripts must be included with the application.
 
7. Students must submit two letters of recommendation with their application.
 
8. Any given student will only be awarded this scholarship once.
 
9. Applicants should be working on an issue or organism that occurs within the geographic coverage of the WFIWC.

Other information relating to the awarding of the WFIWC Memorial Scholarship:

1. All applications will be evaluated on the quality and significance of their research; academic records; and, referees.
 
2. The Scholarship Committee will decide on recipients of the scholarship.
 
3. Members of the Scholarship Committee will not vote on applications from their own students or students from their institution.
 
4. The Scholarship Committee should assign an alternate who has voting rights to the Committee in the event that some regular committee members may be ineligible to vote.
 
5. There will be no stipulations put on how a student uses the scholarship.
 
6. Applicants and/or recipients of the scholarship are encouraged to make presentations (talk or poster presentation) of their research at the WFIWC.
 
7. The amount of the award will be $500 US funds.
 
8. One scholarship will be awarded each year.
 
9. The scholarship recipient will be given a small plaque in addition to the financial award.
 
10. The scholarship recipient will be given the opportunity to deliver an oral presentation at the next WFIWC meeting. The student's registration fee for that meeting will be waived and the WFIWC will provide lodging for one night at that meeting.

Awards will be announced at the final business meeting each year during the Western Forest Insect Work Conference.
