Thanks to all for a successful day
Sharon went over a list of hits and misses, included at the end of the notes. Here are some additional comments:
Maybe use a different venue such as LaSell's, or get more library involvement to be able to have concurrent sessions. This could help provide time and space for the general public.
Tap into graduate students for small group and hands on demonstrations.
It was noted that the 9th graders didn't behave particularly well at lunchtime, but those that went to the group sessions did well.
We need to get involvement from the teachers prior to the event. For instance, giving them information on how groups will need to be split, so they can have that worked out ahead of time. Also provide information to prepare curriculum activities.
Make sure that we invite folks that want to be here.
Need chaperones, even for the 9th graders.
Integrate the GPS activities with the hands-on demonstrations. Have the data from the GPS walk downloaded into Arc.
Dave expanded on the eyedropper tool George had mentioned from a previous meeting to get color into the legend. Dave has a methodology for getting texture into the legend as well, which will be posted on the web pages.
Theresa was having problems with the scale changing when switching from layout view to data view, when she needed it to be constant.
George recommended putting graphics into the data view, rather than the layout view.
Matt suggested setting the extent in the data frame properties (????)
Ken mentioned that ther is an ArcView version 3 extension on ArcScripts for creating a matrix of distances between a group of points. (needed by someone in the genetics group)
Do we have ArcView 3.3 on campus?
Theresa is working on finding a room for an introduction class for USFS folks. There may be room for Partners, with the permission of the training materials creator. It would be 1 week long and cover editing, geodatabases, topology, basics of GIS, and spatial analyst.
Keith can load data into the SDE database after Terralyn changed the file group to allow for unlimited growth. Loading with keywords still failed. It has later been determined that file groups and key words are not necessary in our environment.
We need volunteers to provide updates on their projects.
Maureen Duane is scheduled for the Jan. 8th meeting for a LARSE update.
Theresa may discuss integrating the GIS data into the LTER web pages (???)
Matt Gregory offered a presentation in March on 'imputation software'
Theresa talked about GeoCorps getting GIS people into developing countries to work on projects. She will post a link to their web site. Geocorps
George attended a Dept. of Interior meeting. Thanks for the summary, George: Last week I attended a meeting of Dept of Interior GIS folks who represent the DOI bureaus that work in Oregon and Washington - BLM, National Park Service, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and of course, USGS. We meet every year to come to consensus on a request to the DOI High Priority Data Program - a national program to fast track frequently requested spatial. In the past this group has been instrumental in the development of statewide 10m dems and Digital Ortho Quarter Quads for both states. The funding for the program has been spotty ever since 9-11, when the priority switched to gathering data for the Dept of Homeland Security. This meeting was to revisit our request from last year for FY 2004, when we requested LIDAR data for the Columbia River from Bonneville Dam to the mouth. The top priority after our meeting remained LIDAR, but a second priority in both states was to contribute to the development of 1:24000 hydro data for inclusion in the USGS National Hydro Dataset. If the LIDAR work proved to be impractical, our request would be for NHD work. A follow-up conference call is scheduled for early next week.
The genetics group that Ken works with is working on the USFS network, using spatial data on the unix network. They want to move their data to the USFS machines, but there is no room. It was suggested that he speak with Theresa Larrabee and David Hood about the space issues.
Theresa suggested that for fordata information, it can be copied to the local drive since it doesn't need to be backed up.
George wanted to know where USFS folks should go to get started with GIS. Questions can be sent to Theresa about training, virtual campus, how to get started, and where to find data.
Ken reported that the ALI group will be moving their data from the unix network to a PC server.
There was a discussion about how to arrange data so that it is logical to find. Some people like it arranged geographically, where others may need it by agency. We talked about a metadata server, or creating virtual views of the data using links into the existing fordata structure. More discussions are needed, on just how the data should be presented.
