Spatial Data Management Group Meeting Notes For November 20, 2008
Treats: Dave
Notes: Patti
Facilitator: Keith
Attendees: Terralyn , Matt G., Keith O., Kelly C, Dave HW, Patti H., Theresa V.
Review of GIS Day/recent speakers
No speaker, review of GIS Day activities. Keynote speaker Mike Bailey was excellent and the GPS walk went well with fewer children than some of the past GIS Days.
Agenda:
Upcoming Meetings:
Kelly attended a workshop in Portland on Intrinsic Potential which was pretty good.
Training needs:
Kelly’s presentation on Adobe Illustrator is a work in progress, might be in the new year.
What's new in ArcGIS 9.3...start of winter term
Data:
Discussion about data placed in FORDATA versus the Groups folder. The question to address in regards to LIDAR data is how to store the raw data and the derivatives, and what levels of access privledges are appropriate. Theresa has LIDAR for the Salmon River estuary and for Mt. St. Helens as well as the Andrews.
Dave discussed what LIDAR point cloud data is available at the USGS versus the Seamless Server, which has an index of the publicly available LIDAR and has bare earth surfaces.
Theresa will ask Mike Bailey about leads for working with LIDAR visualization
Discussion about the CD553 course: Scientific Visualization” taught by Mike Bailey
Software
Terralyn had a bad week working on rebuilding a disk and has questions differences in the funtionality of ArcServer and Image Server. Is there a disaster recovery process for ArcGIS Server? There is not documentation for dealing with many of the problems she has encountered, such as rewriting over eddited settings resulting in edits and corrections being lost. There was some discussion about the amount of time it takes to get the servers back online. What does the OSU Library do?
Round table:
Matt: The GNN for 1990’s and 2000 soon to be released. GNN process is being prototyped for a nation wide forest dataset developed from new FIA plots.
Theresa: She presented a map developed from the HJ Andrews LIDAR dataset. It was very lovely. She is working on LIDAR projects and still trying to test Google mapping on her website but is having problems.
Patti: Has been using hardwood attributes from the GNN datasets for Oregon and new data from Northern California for bird studies for Matt Betts and Joan Hagar
Dave: Not doing a lot of GIS right now, working up field data from the summer determining when a fish is a migrant
Keith: Working with Biscuit data still.
Next Meeting: December 18th,
