Spatial Data Management Group Meeting Notes For November 30, 2006
Treats: Theresa
Notes: Terralyn
Attendees: Terralyn, Matt G., Ray Drapek, John Wells, Dave H-W, Kelly C, and Theresa
Agenda:
Upcoming Meetings:
Northwest ESRI User Conference, Sunriver: September 13-15. Kelly attended the conference and received a 1st place ribbon for his poster. The number of sessions which may be of interest to a participant may be low, but it was good to reconnect with folks in the GIS community, including folks from the Corvallis area. There was a 9.2 dog and pony show, and they showed off the new help system.
Remote Sensing Workshop: February 13/14. Theresa will be attending a meeting to determine who the speakers are going to be. There will be a one day meeting/workshop at the LaSell Stuart Center, and Ann Nolan will do a 1-day training.
Geospatial 2007: May 6th-11th. Website: Geo07 This will be held at the Portland Hilton, and is a combined effort of the USFS and BLM. Contact Theresa Valentine if you are not a Fed, but interested in attending.
Training needs:
Xtools Seminar: 2 hour seminar on December 14th, taught by George Lienkaemper.
Intro to ArcGIS for Experienced GIS Users: 2 hours on January 10th, taught by Theresa Valentine. Kelly offered to assist.
Theresa is planning on doing a “What’s new in ArcGIS 9.2” later in the winter.
Theresa also passed along a list of online seminars and classes available from ESRI.
• Matt participated in an online seminar on publishing ArcMap mxd’s as a web service or online web page. You could also publish arcglobe sessions and tools (ie – buffer tool). You can publish from ArcCatalog, or with an ArcGIS server tool.
Data:
Pilot project: Theresa and Terralyn are waiting for the 9.2 products to be available. (CD’s now on campus, although not on the download server yet)
Imagery portal – Theresa has samples of the compressed imagery, which will be available through the portal, compared to the original imagery. There was a shift in the data observed in at least one case. Contact Theresa for more information, especially if you think you need the raw data. Theresa is trying to find out more information on the compression algorithm.
GIS Day Review:
Overall the day went well. Some notes on the day include:
GPS course was cool.
Keynote speaker was good, although some people came on the 16th, instead of the 15th.
Ran out of treats for the kids. :(
In 2008 Dawn Wright will be on sabbatical, so Theresa’s not sure if there will still be a grad student to coordinate efforts.
There is a Smithsonian exhibit on Earth From Space that may come to OSU.
Some concern about the number of kids in a group for the GPS walk. It’s difficult to keep 10 kids engaged with one unit.
Round table:
Matt - There will be a meeting with Python folks from Alsea Geospatial on the 5th @ 2:00. The 2001 NLCD (National Land Cover Dataset) for Oregon and Washington should be ready by Dec. 20th. . Matt will put in fordata.
Terralyn - Another computing cluster will be coming to Forestry through a grant with The Nature Conservancy for the GCLIM group.
Dave - – ASPRS Columbia River group meeting will be held in Portland in January. USGS will be getting a new building west of the EPA building at the end of Jefferson Street. USGS doesn’t have ArcGIS 9.2 yet.
Theresa -Theresa will organize a group lunch with George outside of the event being held on the 21st. HJA is receiving new computers and videoconferencing equipment with TRF (Technology Resource Fee) money. Theresa has a 9.2 prerelease installed on her USFS computer, but she is still helping folks install 9.1. Trying to do animations and time series in 9.2, but it appears that the data will need to be in geodatabaes.
John - John has ported the MC1 model from the Solaris machines to the Linux cluster.
Next Meeting: December 21th,
Treats: John Wells
Notes: Dave Hockman-Wert
Speaker: No speaker, and will adjourn before 11:30 to attend George’s retirement gathering.
