GIS Day debriefing

Great job for all those that contributed to the success of GIS Day. We received good feedback from teachers and parents, and there was a good turnout for the Keynote speaker. A couple of other notes: GPS walks went well, and even better when the groups were smaller Still not enough time. Maybe the kids could bring their lunches, to get a bit more time. Make sure that transition time is scheduled into the morning. Next year, catering will do the serving of the treats.

Meetings

  • Nov. 30 - Mid-Willamette Valley GIS Users Group. Theresa will talk about the WatershedDB project.
  • Python Group will schedule a meeting for December
  • Sean SanRomani and Terralyn Vandetta will be attending an ESRI System Architecture Trainging Dec. 15-16th in Salem.

    Presentation

Theresa gave an ArcIMS presentation on the WatershedDB Project. The project linsk climate hydrology sites to spatial data. WshedDB Website Theresa also gave a brief demonstration of the clip/zip/ship functionalities of the Data Delivery Extension (DDE) for ArcIMS.

    Training possibilities

  • A beginners' course for ArcGIS has been requested of Theresa. It would be for Forest Service and OSU folks, and possibly a 1-2 day course. No date or actual curriculum set. She may even use a guided tour of Virtual Campus. - Also a plotter training for the plotters in FSL is needed. Possibly in December. It would be a held at the plotters themselves.
  • ArcIMS training again, to garner more interest.
  • George Lienkaemper is expected to have a Metadata course Winter Term.

    Roundtable

Theresa - Issues with the watershed command problems, in arc toolbox have been resolved, with ESRI's help. It was necessary to override the defaults.

Matt - Setting up code on the linux cluster. Matt's working on running the GNN model on a parallel system using the GDAL open source libraries. Matt would also like Feature Analyst for ArcGIS, which appears to be a 3rd party product. The LEMMA group is reworking their FRA position opening.

George - Tinkering with ArcIMS sites. Two of the projects include data from research by Nathan Poage (cruise data), and Oriane Taft (shorebird habitat from satellite imagery). George is working on expanding his GIS role back to the notion of the USGS Research Center, rather than just this field station. He uses WebX to help folks remotely. He is also building a system parallel to 'fordata'. Documenting corporate layers, and creating an IMS Metadata Server.
