Agenda Items:

1. GIS Day, November 19, 2003

We still need to recruit helpers for four main time slots: 1) Tuesday, Nov. 18, after 4 p.m. - Help set up in FSL West Conference Room
2) Wednesday, 7 a.m. - Move desks and set up posters in Richardson 107 and 115
3) Wednesday, after lunch - Move desks in Richardson 107 to prepare for Stuart's talk
4) Wednesday, after Stuart's talk, around 4 p.m. - Clean up, take down posters, etc.

One hundred thirty students will be attending GIS Day at OSU. This includes 90 5th grade students from three different schools, and 50 9th graders from Lebanon High School. The 5th-graders will be at the College of Forestry in the morning, and the 9th-graders will be at Geosciences in the morning and the College of Forestry in the afternoon.

The 5th-graders will rotate through three main activities:
1) GPS activity, led by Matt Gregory and many others
2) Hands-on GIS activity, led by Kelly Christiansen and Chris Zanger
3) Small group demonstrations, which itself has a mini-rotation:
a. GIS overview, two parallel sessions led by Sharon Clarke and Keith Olsen
b. RS overview, two parallel sessions led by Maureen Duane and Jeremiah Knoche
c. Fish/habitat applications, two parallel sessions led by Becky Flitcroft and Dave Hockman-Wert
d. ArcIMS demonstration, led by Theresa Valentine

Each of the three sessions will be 50 minutes long, with no scheduled break between sessions. The first session begins at 9:20 a.m. Terralyn Vandetta will be helping move the students from one small-group demo to the next.

Students will move to the West Conference Room in FSL for lunch at 12:00 noon, where Stuart Allan will speak about his work.

After lunch, the 9th-graders will rotate through two sessions, the GPS activity and the hands-on GIS activity.

Stuart Allan will give a talk for the general public in Richardson 107 at 3 p.m.

Ray Drapek and others will be taking photos. We may need release forms to put photos of schoolchildren on the website. Theresa will check in to how we can do that.

We discussed how to structure presentations for 5th-graders. Core curriculum for 5th grade and 9th grade includes geography, so they should have some understanding of what we'll be talking about. They have been learning some cartography and probably have played the Oregon Trail game. Basically, a good approach seemed to be to talk in broad strokes about the research that we are doing, and explain how the GIS technology helps us achieve our goals.

Other activities around campus:
- City of Corvallis Mobile GIS lab will be at the Memorial Union quad, with their map gallery.
- Valley Library will feature a number of GIS-related organizations in the community: Alsea Geospatial, Richard Ash (GPS), OSU Computer Science (Toshimi Minoura), USGS National Map, and others.
- Geosciences graduate students will be going to K-12 schools to talk to classes about GIS. Many schools wanted to send students (350 or so) to the OSU GIS Day events, but we couldn't take everyone.

2. Willamette Valley GIS Users Group

The next Willamette Valley GIS Users Group quarterly meeting will be held at La Sells Stewart Center on OSU campus, Tuesday, November 18, 1 to 4 p.m. Dawn Wright, Kuuipo Walsh, Toshimi Minoura, and Tim Fiez will be making presentations. See the website for more info: http://www.orurisa.org/wgisug/events.html

3. SDE Update

Keith has been trying to load data in to ArcSDE, but hasn't been able to get it to work yet. When a grid is loaded with a keyword, it crashes on the first try. When a grid is loaded without a keyword, it works for the first one. But it crashes if a second grid is loaded. More work is needed to determine the problem.

Other Business:

4. ArcGIS Tips and Tricks page is up on the SDMG website: http://www.fsl.orst.edu/sdmg/tips.htm Theresa can post additional tips as people send them to her.

5. We would like to have Maureen Duane come to an upcoming SDMG meeting, to give us an overview of the LARSE (Laboratory for Applications of Remote Sensing in Ecology) program.

6. Theresa will be leading an ArcGIS training for USFS employees in January or February, probably at Siuslaw N.F. offices. Others may be able to attend, if interested.

7. Ken said that a new Italian researcher, first name of Luca, will be joining the CLAMS group for the next year. Welcome him when you see him.

Next Meeting date-December 11, 2003, 10:00 a.m. in Richardson 313
