Topics:

GIS Day

Sharon reported on the results of the GIS Day meeting that was held at 9:00am Thursday October 9th.
Chris is going to make contacts with local schools, looking for upper level high school students and looking to send graduate students out into the school.
We are lining up a lunch time speaker (Stuart Allen or his son, and next choice is Dawn Wright who has agreed to speak if needed).
Matt will be leading up the GPS walk group.
When the high school students are in the other venue, we'll be trying to get OSU and community members to visit.
We have $125 for treats and some money from Dawn.
Dawn is going to do press releases. She talked to the new OSU president, and gave him a GIS day pin.
We'll be trying to get local GIS folks to do booths.
We're working on getting the Corvallis Moble GIS Van again, with a potential for them to be a stop on the GPS tour.
Sharon will be asking for people to do small group demos and help out with GIS day.

Arc SDE/IMS Information

Wished Keith was here to give a report on his progress with moving data into SDE. Maybe next month.

Meetings:

Kuuipo reported on the Mid Willamette Valley GIS Users Group Meeting being held at the LaSells Stewart Center (November 18th 1-4) Dawn will talk about the new certificate program in GIScience at oSU and the Oregon Coastal Atlas, Kuuipo will talk about starting an Oregon chapter of the Society for Conservation GIS, Toshimi Minoura will show their web based GIS applications, and TIm Fiez will talk about the OSU Natural Resource Digital Library

Virtual Oregon Metadata Portal

Kuuipo Walsh gave a demonstration of the portal. They have over 1000 metadata records in it, and you can browse and search. Qeustions we had were: future funding, how to get people to use it (publicity), and how does it relate to what we are already doing. Funding is somewhat uncertain at the time. The program will need to be funded by grants. It will be moving to production mode after the first of the year. It was suggested that a live demo of the portal happen at GIS Day. Kuuipo will send out a message when it is operational.

Others

There was a discussion on how to go about forming a campus wide GIS group, similar to the SDMG. The SDMG didn't want their meeting to turn into a 'campus-wide' group, as they often discuss specific network/technical issues for the forestry community. We also didn't want to lose the perfect size of the group. It was suggested that Chris try starting with a list server, then perhaps have meetings hosted by different colleges/departments around campus (sort of a seminar series).
