Spatial Data Management Group Notes September 29, 2002

Note taker: Sharon Clarke

Treats: Michael Guzy

Attendees:

Terralyn Vandetta, Sean SanRomani, Keith Olsen, Martie Cavit, Theresa Valentine, Sharon Clarke, Michael Guzy, Dave Hockman-Wert, Jonathan Brooks, Jennifer Swenson, Matt Gregory,

Agenda Items:

Awards:

Michael for great treats, Karin Fassnacht for the Image of the Month, and Sharon for note taking and adding data to fordata and a record in the spatial data base

SDMG web page:

Theresa will check with Gail Wells about the linkages between the cof and fsl web page, in an effort to make the sdmg web page more visible from the cof web page.

Spatial Data Catalog:

Theresa is the current contact point. Yang is willing to make this web accessible. This brought up several issues. Who will maintain? How does this fit into other web interfaces such as the COF helpdesk page? Will this be obsolete or redundant with ArcIMS metadata serving capabilities in ARCGIS. How does this fit with the LARSE database. This will be discussed more at the next meeting. Theresa will check into the capabilities of ArcGIS. Sharon will talk to Tom and Maureen about the LARSE database. It was suggested that Yang put the web application on Rocky. Database should be put on /data/fordata instead of T:/spatial/ spatial so Arc Catalog can read.

PC network disk space:

Keith is testing and comparing performance of: samba-unix through trillium, samba-unix through sage, pc network, and stand alone disk space (100gb). Will report back to the group.

Meeting Updates:

Geosciences framework group meeting: Next meeting-Oct 2, 2-4 Portland State Office Building. Trying to build support for statewide geology at 1:100,000-scale. Yeah!!

Geospatial Statistics Training:

Both sessions full and there is waiting list.

GIS day 11/20:

Theresa, Dawn Wright, Linda Ashkenas, and Sharon met to plan day. Idea is to set up a day that can be easily implemented in subsequent years. Will contact some local schools to inquire about their interest in participating. Will have posters, hands on demonstrations, and maybe some presentations. Next planning meeting-Sept. 23, 11:00 in FSL 349. Anyone is welcome to come with ideas or to help organize.

Other Topics:

FSL 345 will no longer be a GIS Lab. Terralyn is looking for homes for some of the public machines. The big plotter is being moved to FSL 334 and the small plotter to 231-unclear as to whether it is hooked up or not. 8mm tape drive will be moved to 231.

FLS 217 will be remodeled after Oct. 1st.

DOQ's: Theresa is getting uncompressed 1994 DOQ's in UTM from Steve Barnett and copying them for our use. She will let us know when she has a full set. THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH SOME OF THE 2000 DOQ's (DONE FOR FOREST SERVICE LANDS). THEY MAY HAVE SMUDGES AND SMEARS.
