Agenda

Meetings:

  • FOSS4G will be in Victoria, BC from September 24-27, 2007. The annual Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) conference brings together the people who create, use, and support open spatial software. $575 Canadian for the full conference and workshops. Matt will be attending.
  • LTER Information Managers Meeting in San Jose, CA August 2-5: Theresa attended. Michael Goodchild spoke at the meeting. The meeting wasn’t necessarily for GIS types, so Goodchild did a good job introducing them to GIS.
  • The NW GIS User Group will be held from September 10-14 in Tacoma. Rumor has it that Ray Drapek and John Wells may be attending.
  • Geoprogramming group meeting: Meeting on August 22 focused on building models in Model Builder. It was deemed worthwhile; a number of people were able to get models built.
  • Willamette Valley GIS Users Group Meeting Wednesday August 29th, Salem. Theresa will be going and giving a talk on temporal animations. website
  • GIS Day planning meeting: August 30th, and next one October 2 (1:15pm); Kuuipo mentioned a contact with a 5th Grade teacher from Riddle, Douglas County, who sounded very interested in having his kids come to this, or otherwise get exposure to and training on GIS.

    Training needs:

ArcGIS Server: Theresa working on a workshop/seminar. ArcWeb Services seems to be a useful tool. Yang found out about this at an Adobe conference. Maybe we could have Yang come and talk about it sometime.

    Data

  • Data/fordata on Windows – Theresa having some trouble accessing this directory from her Forest Service account (and Dave had some trouble – now sorted out – accessing from USGS account).
  • LiDar Projects: Biscuit Fire (now) and HJ Andrews (leaf off), these are being funded by USFS and flown by Watershed Sciences (Russ Faux). Matt also mentioned a coastal LiDAR project with Steve Wonzell as the lead PI, and Warren and Janet as co-PIs. They’ll be looking at riparian areas, vegetation mapping, and habitat suitability.
  • Keith is looking for IVMP data (or the equivalent?) in California.

    ArcGIS Service Pack 3

Per the email of August 16, ArcGIS Service Pack 3 is being rolled out to all OSU computers.

    Future Speakers

Matt, on the FOSS4G Conference, pehaps Yang, and Dylan for October

    Round table:

  • Heather: Successfully made a model using Model Builder at the Geoprogramming Group meeting.
  • Keith: Discovered that you can see metadata of the geoprocessing history for a spatial layer using the FGDC stylesheet
  • Kelly: Won a “lift-assisted” disc golf tournament at Mount Bachelor.
  • Matt: Wonders whether postGRASS (postSQL) is on OSU computers. Terralyn says it is not.
  • Kuuipo: Institute for Natural Resources is starting work on a new spatial data portal for Oregon. When finished, it will replace the Oregon Geospatial Data Clearinghouse and Virtual Oregon. They’re using ESRI’s GIS Portal Toolkit. This site will be a sub-type of Geospatial One Stop, the national spatial metadata/data catalog. They also have a Wildfire Risk Explorer, for anyone interested in that topic.
  • Andrea, the OSU librarian, says that the Valley Library hopes to have a spatial data librarian eventually.
  • Theresa: She soon may be a Forest Service SDE research representative. Also, the Andrews is in the midst of a big data push, trying to get a lot of data online. This has led to fussing with old shapefiles to try to figure out their origins/metadata/creation process.

    Next Meeting September 20th:

    Notes: Terralyn

    Treats: Kelly

Speaker: no speaker, Dylan will be speaking on October 18
