SDMG meeting Notes - August, 14, 2003

Attendees: David Hockman-Wert, Ray Drapek, Theresa Valentine, Matt Gregory, Keith Olsen, Sharon Clarke, Terralyn Vandetta, Sean SanRomani, Kelly Christiansen

Awards: Sharon for treats, Terralyn for notetaking, Jerry Mohr for help with the SDE/IMS workshop

There were no follow-up questions from John Sherrard's meeting last month.

Arc SDE/IMS Information

Theresa sent out instructions via email for requesting space on rubble. Information required includes:
Did you attend training?
Will you use IMS?
Name of the database
Size requirements - both vector and raster
Other users needing access
Responsible party for the project, should it go from development to production.
Theresa will post the information on the website.

It is recommended that you only import a subset of data on rubble (development machine) as space is limited. The full dataset can be moved to rocky, and still develop the IMS/Web piece on sandbox until the site is ready to go live.

A second user was added to each new database, which is the ims_user. They don't have as much privileges as the sde_user, and so should limit any security vulnerabilities from the web. The ims_user would be the user you place in the AXL file on the web server.

There was discussion about the need for database design. Maybe we should get Denise Steigerwald to give a workshop on database design. Topics to cover would be 'Why should tables be normalized?" and separating out repeating data.

David mentioned that the Access classes have helped him at least understand how databases can be put together.

The topic is also covered on ESRI's support page. (http://www.esri.com)

If you want to use more than one SDE database in your web design, you need to use java, rather than html.

It may be trial and error (which is what rubble is for) before we come up with good database designs for using SDE.

GIS Day

Dawn Wright has registered OSU at the ESRI Site as having GIS Day activities. There is also a Grad Student in Geosciences to help out with the events.

There hasn't been contact with schools yet. One school requested someone to come to their school to give a talk.

So, do we want to do the same thing as last year?
- Poster Sessions
- Demonstrations

Can we have time for the general public? It was suggested that we save the afternoon for the general public and continue the demonstrations from the morning.

We won't have a pot of money for food like we did last year. Michael Guzy might have a contact at HP willing to provide a donation or sponsorship.

Theresa will check with the Grad Student in Geosciences on the progress of the planning.

We will need more publicity for the afternoon.

Some additional brainstorming on ideas included the possibility of a seminar with guest speaker in the afternoon:
Dawn Wright
Jim Kiser
Mary's River Watershed Council
Dave Holtz (sp?)
Aileen Buckley
Stuart Allen - Matt Gregory has a contact for this one.

Tips and Tricks

Bring your tips and tricks relating to ArcMap to the next meeting. Awards will be presented for those folks contributing.

The tips and tricks will then be posted to the web.

We'll try to provide time at each meeting for tips and tricks of varying topics, rather than workshops.

Tufte workshop

Ray will write up notes. Ray also has the books.

Terralyn and Sean need to develop an agreement for the development machine outlining expectations and restriction.

Next Meeting - Sept. 11, 10:00 am
