Kelly for the beautiful new logo, Jonathan for these here notes, Terralyn and Sean for system administrator bribes and Terralyn for being a Beaver football fanatic.
You can view the SDMG logo on the FSL main page. Sharon will link it to the forestry (COF) webpage as well as a metadata link and a link to Applied GIS listserve on the Intro to GIS, under Help!!!. There is a list of list-servers on this page. Look for the Applied GIS link. The database manager was formerly our dearly departed Doug. For now, Theresa will be the contact point. But in Matt's absence, the consensus was that he may be the Access Guy in the future. Another possibility is Maureen Dwayne (sp?).
Many questions arose as people migrate to PC's. What are data limits (e.g., how much data can you store on the N: drive)? There are currently no quotas. It's kind of a first come, first served system. Currently, there is no network backup of private discs unless the individuals do it themselves. See policy page for information about backup policies and fees.
Geosciences framework group meeting: Sharon is attending these meetings and will post future notes on the sdmg web page. Currently digital geology data is available statewide for the state at 1:500,000 (Walker and MacLeod, 1991)and there are known problems with positional accuraccy. There was talk of smooshing (technical term) together the "best available geology data" (1:24,000; 1:125,000 and 1:250,000-scale) w/ no edge matching of lines and classes. There will be more talk of this issue at the next meeting-Oct 2, 2-4 Portland State Office Building. A presentation was made on the status of soil data by the National Resource Conservation Service. About half of the state has digital soil data at ~ 1:20,000-scale. For more information about the status of mapping see nrcs home page.
Oregon Plan Information System Strategy: (Don't ask about an acronym for this one). This will provide a framework for creating and disseminating natural resources-related data and tools for analysis. Janine Salwasser is the contact. It will be similar to the Agency Formerly Known As SSCGIS, but with natural resource data.
NW ESRI Users Group: In Sunriver 9/23-9/27. Currently no one is going. (FS funds have been drained on the fires).
Matt, Lisa Ganio, Phil Sollins, Theresa, and George met to discuss how we might get acknowledged for metadata, creating data, permanent rather than temp positions, and other such issues. No resolutions were reached, but it's hoped that we can raise awareness so the next generation of techies (or the generation after, or after…) may gain more recognition (and money?) for what they do.
-2nd session full (17 people), May be room in 1st session. Dates are Sept 30-Oct 2 and Oct. 2-Oct 4th.
Theresa, George, Sharon gave presentation (see Sharon for handout of presentation) to committee and dept. heads were invited. Suggestions were to outsource email and web applications to the university, rather than being handled locally. There was more web discussion than database. Final report is due back in mid-Sept. It will then be presented to a committee. Stay tuned.
Terralyn will physically move Sequoia from FSL to Rich. Websites will be down on Thurs. 9/5 from approx. 8-9. She will be adding memory and a faster network card.
GIS day: 11/20 need to firm up plans. Should we try to get more people here? Sharon, Theresa (others?) will meet soon to plan (meeting September 4th in Sharon's office at 9:00 am). Maybe talk to Margie Hoover about how wood magic attracts people.
345 plotter fixed, but where is it? Digitizer will go to an archive somewhere and 345 will be closed. Digitizing will be available through George's GIS lab and new plotter will be moved to a to-be-determined location.
OUS working on data portal for Oregon data. Theresa will forward link to website when it is available for release.
