John Sharrard (ESRI – Olympia, WA) shared what is coming in ArcGIS 9.3 (Desktop, Server and Logistics)

General
  • Kuuipo reported that OSU has not received 9.3 yet because there was a billing problem
  • many more rollouts of 9.3 to come in many different venues (User Conference, regional meetings)
  • most of the development hours went into ArcGIS Server
  • focus on quality: bug fixes, documentation, redesign of existing software
  • still need to uninstall previous versions of ArcGIS Desktop before installing 9.3
    Geoprocessing enhancements
  • improved table and join functions
  • better error handling and messaging
  • error reporting directly to ESRI (much like Microsoft)
    Updated Help Systems
  • graphic styling to help make more intuitive
  • videos added to help for step-by-step instructions
    ArcGIS Desktop Resourc Center
  • portal to ArcGIS Desktop
  • capability to add layers, mxds from resource center
  • simplifies the process of connecting to remote servers
  • both free and premium based data will be available
  • premium vendors include TeleAtlas, iCubed, Metro regional government
  • resource centers for many different products (ArcGIS Server, Mobile, Engine, etc.)
    Specific Enhancements
  • ability to convert graphics to feature classes
  • ability to clip rasters based on graphics
  • easier interface to joining attribute tables
  • Lidar tools (including pyramiding of TIN data
  • cartographic enhancements such as placement options and Mapplex improvements
    ArcGIS Server 9.3
  • improved connectivity to remote services
  • vastly improved cached mapping tools
  • tight integration with ArcGIS Image Server
  • following more open protocols (WMS, WCS, KML)
    Introduction to ArcLogistics
  • all tools profiled here are available through Network Analyst, just not as packaged as in ArcLogistics
  • John gave an example of optimizing the scheduling of sporadic pickup for refuse, which was very impressive
  • ability to give the model a number of specialized constraints
  • useful for scheduling anywhere from 5 – 1500 vehicles for route planning
  • can be extended to other applications (e.g. stream surveys)
    OSU as an ESRI Development Center (EDC)
  • first academic institution in Northwest region to qualify
  • receive passes to the Palm Springs Developers’ Summit
  • receive two instructor-led courses presumably at OSU
  • Kuuipo Walsh acts as the local contact for this program
