Kelly brought 3 logos for perusal. Those present examined the choices and voted using a check mark. Check out the SDMG web page for the winner!
Sharon notes that there appears to be no order to the notes on the SDMG web page. Notes will be put in chronological order. Image of the month is a nice feature. Keep those images coming! The new logo may be able to give us more visibility for linking directly to the SDMG page.
ESRI User Conference- George reported on highlights of the ESRI Conference. See Attachments for documents. Note: OnLine issues of ArcNews and ArcUser contain feature articles on Toplogy in ArcGIS and Raster Data Management in ArcGIS. Thanks, Jennifer, for tracking down these links:

OUS/GIS Meeting -Theresa met with OUS and Agency reps to discuss the development of a web interface that links directly to data instead of linking to individual web sites where users may have to search out information. This project is expected to be an interim solution until more sophisticated data portals are developed. This site will be implemented for framework data, initially, and should be operational in the next few months. Theresa will link to the OUS page from the SDMG page.
Geosciences Framework Meeting- Sharon attended this meeting. Geosciences is one of the OGIC themes. Several potential themes have been grouped together under the geosciences banner - soils, geology, geomorphology and others (among them the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). This group is charged with developing and implementation plan for a specific theme and to develop data standards charges- implementation plan for theme development, standards for theme. Framework group will make suggestions to agencies developing a data set. Another meeting is set for early August. Contact Sharon Clarke for details.
Biosciences Framework Group- Similar group for Biosciences is being headed up by Janine Salwasser. Go to OGDC web page for more information
SDE Update: Sean reported that while the installation of ArcSDE is easy, the implementation of multiple instances needed for separate databases is decidedly more complicate. Sean has built foundation for this implementation. Sean listed 7 steps before multiple instances can be built. This is not trival. Theresa will begin working this new set up. (Note: There are connection problems between SDE 8.2 and earlier versions of ArcCatalog. Be sure to upgrade to ArcGIS 8.2 before trying to use ArcSDE.)
SDE Training: Theresa reported the highlights. This was rated as a good training session. The recommendation is to keep all features in the same projection in the geodatabase. There were lots of good pointers on how to organize data within geodatbase. Topology important - slivers hard to find in geodatabase. Non GIS Tables can be registered in SDE, but cannot be edited. Link to layer to get table attributes displayed. Theresa will provide an updated session for ArcIMS using the geodatabase in the fall.
Data/Fordata machine update: - Terralyn reported that the new hardware is installed and the first copy of data has been made. An update to the data is likely this weekend. Down again in early August to remove disk. There is a FAQ on the Forestry Helpdesk web page for directions to link to /data/fordata read only. Theresa will prepare a link to it on the web page.
DOQ's -2000 and 1994 update: Theresa has list of 2000 photography on data/fordata/index. The 2000 DOQs cover USFS land in western Oregon (with some from the Fremont NF). Next set coming next year. CDs are currently housed in Theresa's office. Theresa is working on completing 1994 photography by requesting specific quads from OGDC. Forestry Learning Center has copies of some of Theresa's set plus some additional from Michael Wing. (Note: State's projected compressed DOQQs don't line up properly with other data. Be sure to request original unprojected/uncompressed DOQQ)
Role of technologists and science: Matt Gregory met with Phil Sollins and Lisa Ganio to discuss the role of technology in science. How does technology fit into science model? Focus has shifted from science support to technology service. How can computing group be more integrated into science? The attempt of these discussions is to begin addressing the issues. Next meeting 1:30 Aug 5 Richardson 201.
Willamette Atlas: Linda reported that the atlas is out. The OSU bookstore has run out of the three copies they ordered. Orders can be placed through bookstore or OSU Press website. No decision yet about putting out PDFs. Cost is $55. A 20% discount can be had with a Bookstore VIP card.
Geospatial Statistics Training: There will be two 2-day sessions (Sept. 30 - Oct 1, and Oct 2 - Oct 3) with 34 slots available. Website should be up next week for signup.
College of Forestry Computing Resources External Review - This review will be held August 13&14. There will be open sessions on the 14th for faculty, staff and students for open discussion with reviewers. Specific GIS meeting with reviewers is on the afternoon of Aug 13th.
Special Note: Doug Oetter will defend on August 16th at 10am in Wilkinson 235.
