1. Speaker: Kelly Christiansen
Mapping Tips and Tricks Using ArcGis 9.2: How to make a map that doesn’t look like you did it in ArcView 2.1 (File is a powerpoint, so you need powerpoint software to open.)
Agenda:
1. Meetings:
ASPRS National Conference in Portland: April 28 to May 2nd. GIS in Action will be on one of the conference days. No one is planning to attend.
ESRI User Conference: August 4-8, San Diego. Dave is attending; Patti is likely to attend. Ray has a brochure for this conference. Marc Rempel will probably be unable to attend because his new baby will only be a few weeks old.
NW ESRI User Group: October 23-24 Sun Valley, ID: Kelly plans on attending. Theresa may go.
Mid Willamette GIS Users Group Spring Meeting? May 14th 1-4pm Eugene Water & Electric Board, Eugene.
BLM Eugene meeting: Oregon Oaks Working Group (TNC, NW Habitat). Doing prairie and oak woodland habitat mapping. April 18. Patti Haggerty and Joan Hagar attended.
National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) Applications Workshop: September 16, Portland.
2. Training:
Heather got the help she needed with her SQL/Access database question.
Keith talked about LiDAR needs. He is interested in getting a user group together in May to talk about what’s happening in the College of Forestry community related to LiDAR. LARSE is doing some work, and Mark Nay is working on Biscuit data. Maybe we could collaborate on collecting data and combining this with other data.
Geoprogramming meeting: The next meeting will be about a C# open source mapping tool. Meeting date not yet scheduled.
3. Data:
Some PNW Hydro 24k streams (Washington and Oregon Framework Hydrography data) are on T:\GIS\oregon\hydrography24k. These are available by 4th level HUC (subbasin). The Pacific Northwest Hydrography Framework is currently converting the Oregon/Washington dataset to the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) data format.
Landfire DVDs – Keith will put these data on T:\GIS\usa.
USFS and USGS are not directly connected to T:\GIS (but USGS has since developed an acceptable workaround).
4. Software
Service Pac 5 is now out. Check the support page on esri.com. Theresa has experienced problems with Service Pack 5.
The rumor from the developer’s conference is that ArcGIS 9.3 will be out in June.
Discussion of ESRI Development Center for OSU:
The ESRI Development Center (EDC) program provides recognition and special status to university departments that have exemplary programs focused on educating students to design and develop GIS applications using ESRI's ArcGIS desktop or server technology. This can include programs that help students advance and extend ESRI's ArcGIS software or provide training in system integration and application development within a particular domain.
Students enrolled in EDC programs will be given special access to ESRI software and have opportunities to be recognized for their accomplishments. Dawn Wright will talk about it at the next meeting.
5. Round Table:
Peder: Downloading recent elevation data to correct Landsat data elevation models for NWFP.
Keith: Collecting Landfire data, getting Fire Condition Class for all National Forests in the West.
Patti: Getting to know the lay of the land in FRESC, on the westside of the Cascades. In the process, she learned about the Elwha dam removal process. They have LiDAR up to the edge of the park, but not *in* the park. She thinks it would be valuable for before/after analysis in and below the reservoir to have LiDAR data from both time periods.
Theresa: She has Bill georeferencing air photos on the H.J. Andrews back to the 1940s. They are having some issues with the NAD27/NAD83 difference. Most layers in T:\GIS are in NAD27, but ArcGIS projection-on-the-fly is not getting the NADCON right in all cases.
Heather: LEMMA now has updated landcover maps (GNN) for all of Oregon! Available on the web at Study Areas.
Question: SDE, why should we convert to this? To take full advantage of the geodatabase.
Next Meeting:
May 29
