Spatial Data Management Group meeting - April 17, 2003

Attendees

Keith, Michael, Ray, Sean, Theresa, Terralyn, Sharon, Dave, Matt, Kelly

Agenda:

Awards Treats: Sharon
Notes: Ray
Major awards to Terralyn and Sean for their efforts on the ArcIMS problem (see below). No other awards.

Theresa was going to supply all in attendance with a complimentary award, but decided against it since nobody has submitted anything to data/fordata since last September. Bad!

ArcIMS

Terralyn, Sean, Theresa, and Lisa have come up with a solution to the problem of how to implement ArcIMS for projects. A separate machine (development machine) will be set up to allow projects to practice and build ArcIMS applications on the intranet. Only when you are ready will you put it on-line. It takes a lot of rebooting during the development process and you don't want that to be happening on the final site. When it comes time to go on-line there will be a $120 (minimum) setup fee and $600/year for up to 20 Gigs of data. When this new system is set to go Theresa will schedule another SDE and ArcIMS class.

Terrabyte Server - Digital Orthophoto Quads.

Student help will be needed to put digital orthophoto quads online. Theresa to check with helpdesk

National Science Foundation - Partnerships for Innovation Grant (NSF/PFI)

Dawn Wright took the lead and made a considerable effort to assemble a grant proposal for the NSF/PFI grant on behalf of the Virtual Oregon project. Unfortunately, only one grant proposal per university was allowed and another OSU grant application was turned in before Dawn's. Hopefully she will be able to repackage this grant proposal for later use. You can view the proposal at proposal

Arcgis 8.3

Arcgis is available for download. You will be prompted to upgrade to 8.3 if you have 8.2 on your system. Please do so. It will cause problems if you don't upgrade. One change: you won't be able to edit coverages in 8.3 (you could before, but you wouldn't want to).

Meetings

The second Oregon Standards Forum will be June 12 in The Dalles. They will propose transportation and cadastral standards. There will be workshops on elevation, hydrography, and bioscience.
The Willamette GIS Users Group will be meeting on May 12th at the Springfield City Hall Library.
ESRI User's Conference is coming up. Theresa is going. Let her know if you have any questions/concerns that she can bring to the Dr. Office or ESRI staff.

Data

The Oregon Framework Implementation Team will be acquiring LANDSAT 7 images for the whole state. They are in the process of picking scenes. These should be available within the next month.
The Oregon Department of Forestry has available contour data on 4 CDs.

Training

The SDE workshop will not be until mid-May at the earliest. Keith, Kelly, and Matt may do a plotter workshop on May 15. Theresa may be attending a "train the trainer" workshop through the Forest Service up in Portland for ArcGIS.

Earth Viewer 3D

Earth Viewer 3D has been getting quite a bit of attention lately in the media. Sharon was wondering if anyone was using it or if anyone could foresee a use for it. It costs $600/year to use it as an individual. No one knew if there was such a thing as a site license. Some noted that the TerraServer is free, though it lacks some of the bells and whistles. Also ESRI is coming out with an Earth Viewer.

Other Topics

Matt and Theresa discussed the formation of an ArcObjects group (support group?). Matt foresees the group meeting separately from the SDMG and will be setting up a meeting. He is under the impression that most access ArcObjects via Visual Basic.

Next Meeting: May 22 10:00 Richardson 313
