Spatial Data Mgmt meeting notes - 4/19
Terralyn Vandetta <terralyn@FSL.ORST.EDU>
These are the notes that I collected during the spatial data
management meeting held 4/19. Anyone else attending is free to make
additions/corrections. :-)
Attendees: Ken Vance-Borland, Michael Gusy, Mark Klopsch,
Denise Steigerwald, Theresa Valentine, Sharon Clarke, Ray Drapek,
Kelly Christiansen, Terralyn Vandetta, Jonathan Brooks, Russ Faux
Next Meeting - May 31st, 10:00 Richardson 313
Cookies (or "boiled peanuts") - Doug Oetter
Intergraph Campus Site License - There didn't seem to be great
enthusiasm for this product.
ERDAS Manuals - We have 3 sets of hardcopy manuals for Imagine. One
will be available in FSL 345, one in the SLC for cheking out, and
then one additional floater. Much of the information is also in PDF
form on the network. (Contact is Mark Klopsch)
FSRN Spatial Database update - Doug moved the directions for the
spatial database to a new location on the web. They can be found by
navigating www.cof.orst.edu, click on community, spatial data
management group, and then SDMG Geospatial Database. The URL is
http://www.fsl.orst.edu/sdmg/db.html
Profiles/System Optimization write-up - Kathy Howell prepared a
handout of useful information on profiles and system optimization.
These that received it were going to review it, and send changes or
suggestions to Kathy. She will then post in on the web.
There was discussion of where ARC temporary files are stored, and
subsequently left floating when ARC crashes. In Windows NT, most
likely the files are found in c:\temp or c:\windows\temp.
With Windows 2000, they are most likely stored in your profile, which
can cause problems with large profiles. You should be able to change
the location:
Control Panel - System - Environment
In the user variables, there should be a temp. Change this to a
location outside your profile, like c:\temp. The directory needs to
exist, so make sure that it is created first.
Much of the meeting time was spent preparing for the visit by
John Sharrard (April 26th @ 10am, RH 203) An attempt was made to
prioritize all of the questions to ask. Here is my attempt to
summarize those attempts. The questions are numbered, although that
is not their priority number, on the order in which the were brought
up. These are also simplified, and can be found in more detail in
handouts that were distributed at the meeting.
1. Help with the 'same user' errors
2. Problems printing in ArcMap
3. Having to reset the source information in ArcMap.
4. No portable format in ArcMap for exporting data to colleagues
5. Automatic clean and renode in ArcMap
6. Toolbox projection problems
7. Why do we want to convert to the geodatabase?
8. Area and perimeter fields - why not get rid of them?
9. Loss of projection information.
10. What happens when we convert data back into a coverage from the geodatabase
or some other exchange file per request from a user?
What do you lose?
11. Performance issues with the raster processing. Are there advantages to using
a dual processor. Are there other optimizations, like location of data
(samba vs. local)?
12. 256 value limitation in raster processing.
13. Will the raster functionality be as strong as GRID 7x?
14. Integration of Imagine with SDE
15. What replaces the log file?
16. Database issues -
Differences between Oracle and SQL*Server
Management of projections and permissions
Can you access/combine data from two different servers (SQL*Server and Oracle)
Access to the data without using SDE
Other Issues -
ARC 8.0 Issue - Theresa Valentine tried to project a shapefile with
Toolbox (?) Although went through the steps, the projection didn't
change, and neither did the projection info.
DOQ's will be in the Self Learning Center, and there should be an
index there. Theresa will have Pablo update the index. Go through
Theresa Valentine to order additional(?) DOQ's. Provide her in a
text file the name and Ohio Code. All USFS land will have new
DOQ's from 2000 photography.
5th annual NE Oregon Users Meeting - Brochures are available.
ESRI Users meeting - Sharon has a catalog to view
May 3rd, Intermediate Unix Skills workshop 2:30 - 4:00, Pvy 224. Send
a note to kathy.howell@orst.edu to sign up. This is an open forum
class, so bring your questions.
May 10th, Deanna, Visual Basic and database primer (RH 203)
May 24th, Matt, Visual Basic and scripting utility in Arc (RH 203)
Terralyn has ordered a new Sun workstation for web and IMS services.
I think that covers it......
