Spatial Data Management Group Meeting Notes

March 7, 2002

Attending:  Jerry Mohr, Martie Cavit, Theresa Valentine, Matt Gregory, Jonathan Brooks, George Lienkaemper (notes), Sean SanRomani, Ray Drapek, Terralyn Vandetta (cookies)

Awards – Theresa couldn’t get on the system to check for new metadata entries, so awards were postponed.

Theresa – Oregon University System GIS

Curt Pederson represents OUS on OGIC – university reps met to find ways to improve representation for OUS at OGIC.  Result – A meeting has been scheduled with Cy Smith, Curt has political savvy will still be rep – Jim Meacham, Aileen Buckley, Dawn Wright will work as a group with Curt to bolster the presence of universities at OGIC.

OUS will be more active in Framework data sets.  OUS libraries will get all uncompressed DOQs – we want copies.

ArcSDE subcommittee met for an hour before the general meeting and decided to develop a pilot Geodatabase using general layers from western Oregon.  As a test multiple data types, data sources, and two projections will be used.  All but one of the data sets will be in geographic coordinates using the GRS1980 spheroid (NAD83 equivalent).  Layers to be included are 1:24000k roads, 1:100000 streams, OGNIS, city limits, counties, stand age grid, PRISM precip model, and level 4 ecoregions.  George will prepare the data sets and work with Sean to develop the Geodatabase.

Meanwhile, folks who want to develop an ArcIMS project should plan to develop their own geodatabase on Rocky.  Theresa is considering a new ARCSDE4ARCIMS workshop.

Jerry will look into the status of ArcGIS 8.1.2

Matt’s ArcSDE training at ESRI in Olympia was cancelled and is rescheduled for April.

Terralyn reported that ArcIMS Designer and Author have been successfully loaded on PCs.  This takes a load off the server and will help in next workshop.

Jonathan reported on the Geoventure demo showing ˝ meter resolution photography shot from plane – Michael Wing has some examples of data from School Forests and Mary’s Peak

Round Table –

Jonathan -  Found patch analyst ArcView extension to be helpful in developing Fragstat-like measures.  Patch Analyst can be found under File>Extensions in ArcView 3x run over the network.  This and other useful (free) ArcView Extensions and Tools can be found at http://software.geocomm.com/scripts/.

[Editors note:  Also consider the ArcSripts website: http://gis.esri.com/arcscripts/index.cfm?badfile=yes  ]

Martie – putting together 10 m dems for western Washington.  Once completed Martie will make this layer available on /data/fordata.  Note: If you can’t find the Washington DEMs you’re looking for on /data/fordata, check under the Oregon DEMs.  Due to space considerations, some WA 10 data is stored with the OR data.

Matt – has been doing some ArcObjects programming.  It’s a slow process.  Matt does recommend the Visual Campus Visual Basic for Applications class for background.

Jonathan – CLAMS week June 10, technical workshop on LAMPS, CLAMS to the people workshop may also be included.

George – reported that PNW Interior Bureaus have just submitted the high priority data requests for 2003.  Tops on the list was LIDAR data for the lower Columbia, but the #2 priority for Oregon was the completion of the 1:24000 National Hydro Dataset along the Oregon-Idaho border.  Even though the 2002 request for Landsat 7 scenes for Oregon and Washington made the final cut, delivery is in doubt because of the diversion of National Mapping funds to Homeland Security.

Ray –  has been working with World construction set.  He developed a “movie” of time series model output of veg & fire using wcs.  He’s working on refining the output.  Ray is also willing to assist others who want to delve into WCS.

Jerry – suggests you bring a sweater to any classes in Rich.203.  New more compact cpu’s and  flat screen monitors have diminished the excess heat generated in the lab.  Expect a cool and quiet experience.
