Attendees: : Dave, Terralyn, Jerry, Heather, Theresa, Beth, Patti, Marc, Ron, Kelly, Colleen, Matt

Speaker:: Marc Rempel, OSU Libraries: Spatial Data Navigator/GIS Portal Toolkit 9.3

Powerpoint available pdf file

  • Updated version of Virtual Oregon library/INR website: Not live quite yet
  • They are using the GIS Portal Toolkit to serve the spatial data on the navigator, version 9.3. Older version, 3.1, used ArcIMS as a backend. New version uses ArcGIS Server as a backend.
  • Has a pretty good out-of-the-box MapViewer. Uses Java web application rather than .NET.
  • One needs to be a registered admin user or publisher to be able to publish data.
  • To host the Portal Toolkit, need to install Metadata Server, which connects to SDE.
  • Can create a repository to periodically harvest metadata from other locations.
  • Metadata Service is a type of service that can be added to and accessed from ArcCatalog.

    Agenda:

    Meetings

  • February 3: Willamette Valley GIS User Group Meeting, in Albany Good info from John Sharrard about 9.3.1 and new APIs: Silverlight, Flex (Adobe). ESRI is very into cartographic aesthetics lately (Google envy). City of Albany Info Hub (worked with GeoNorth) Linn County made a Mid-Willamette Valley Bicycle Map application (open source) http://www.co.linn.or.us/bikemap/
  • FS/BLM Geospatial ’09 in Snowbird, Utah from April 27-May 1. Website
  • USGS Research in the Northwest – March 3-5 in Portland (USGS employees only, sorry)
  • US-IALE 2009 Symposium: Landscape Ecology meeting in Snowbird, April 12-16

    Training:

  • KML/Google Earth Matt/Keith/Theresa
  • Illustrator: Kelly
  • GeoProgramming group – request for resuscitation? Theresa will call a meeting, topic to be determined.

    Data

Image Server: Terralyn got it installed. Two ways to do it: one is standalone, one is in conjunction with ArcGIS Server. Difference is in method by which you publish the service. Presently she has it installed in conjunction with ArcGIS Server. One creates the service in ArcMap. Then, one adds the service in ArcCatalog and publishes it from there. She has created a tutorial folder to help people figure out how to publish things themselves.

    Software:

  • ArcGIS 9.3.1 -- coming out in the second quarter of 2009
  • Model Builder limitations – doesn’t loop easily, unhappiness with it

    Round Table:

Beth: Finding a glitch in exporting from MXDs to AI format, in 9.3. Exports all layers as one top layer (“Layer”), with all layers under that. Creates banding in the image. Unable to select individual features. Sounds like it might be converting to image.

Patti: GIS Spatial Analysis and Modeling (ESRI Press), just got the book out of the blue, if people are interested in borrowing, let her know.

Marc: The library is re-architecting their website (Explorer), new basin-level portals coming out soon.

Colleen: First time here, wants to connect more with other GIS users, dabbling in Python

Ron: Working on Python, ModelBuilder, etc.

Dave: Database work, learning the new FRESC plotter

Theresa: Still working on LiDAR, needs to figure out how to punch the streams through the roads automatically. Working on ArcGIS Server.

Kelly: Why don’t ESRI toolbars dock the way I want them to?

    Next meeting:

  • March 26, room 313 in Richardson Hall at 10AM.
  • Treats: Theresa
  • Notetaker: Patti
  • Facilitator: Heather
  • Speaker: Terralyn and Ron, ArcGIS Server architecture, Image Server
